Is That a Bird? Or???

For several years now I have looked forward to August, and the return of the White Lined Sphinx Hummingbird moth (Hyles lineata).  The first time I saw one I was certain that it was a small hummingbird.  It flitted quickly through the flowers and had the distinctive hum of the wings.

These moths are not nearly as flighty as hummingbirds.  They seem to ignore you when you approach with camera in hand.  Of course they may just be more concerned with slurping up all that wonderful nectar that they are finding.

This year they seem to particularly like the flowers on my sage plants.  They are also partial to my petunias that are hanging in baskets.  I see them mostly in the evenings, but sometimes midday too.  They are definitely striking in appearance and fun to watch.

  2. Hi Gail, fantastic pictures. Great to see this lovely moth sipping nectar. It is so beautiful with its colours, love the bit of red on the wings. I am always on the look out for moth I think they are delightful.

  4. These are wonderful shots, and I envy your ability to get close to them. I've tried before to photograph these moths, but they are simply not into the idea whenever I approach. Perhaps they saw how the westie snapped at the bees in the lavender patch. I have no idea why, but she is absolutely annoyed with them and it's a hoot to see her try to chase them away.

  5. Great photos, Gail! I too thought it was a hummingbird, the first time I saw one (out at Cabin Lake, just a few miles from Fort Rock!). They are BIG.
