BIG RED

For about three weeks I had been keeping my eye on one particular large tomato in our greenhouse.  I kept waiting for it to get to that perfect shade of red for full flavor.  Finally it looked just right and I bent over to pluck it when....What is THAT?!  Hidden in the greenery I spied another large tomato that was larger yet, and ready to pick.  I could barely wrap my hand around it.

So of course I had to run and grab my camera and pose it in front of Fort Rock (to prove that even in Fort Rock you can grow tomatoes if you work at it.  Yes, it does help to have a greenhouse).

Without a doubt I knew that this was the biggest tomato we had ever raised.  Time to get the kitchen scale out.  The black part of the scale measures 4 and a half inches across.  That's about 11.4 centimeters for anyone outside the U.S.

So what was the weight?  It was a hair shy of 1 pound or,.....451 grams.  Wow!  We were impressed.

There was only one thing left to do.  Yes....Taste test!

I don't know if I have ever made a sandwich that required just one slice of tomato to cover the whole thing.  That was a first for me.
Oh yes, the taste.  It was great.  Juicy and full of flavor they way home grown tomatoes are supposed to taste.
